ECHELON DATA CENTRES GETS PLANNING FOR 2ND DATA CENTRE IN ARKLOW

PRESS RELEASE: Echelon Data Centres has won planning permission for its second data centre development in Arklow, which could represent an investment of around €500m.

Wicklow County Council recently approved Echelon’s planning permission application for the data centre in Arklow’s Kish Business Park, subject to 25 conditions. These included a condition that Echelon pays the planning authority more than €3.1m as a contribution in respect of public infrastructure and facilities.

Niall Molloy, chief executive of Echelon Data Centres, welcomed Wicklow County Council’s decision to grant conditional planning permission.

“We are pleased that Wicklow County Council has reached this decision and, recognising it as the first step in the process, we look forward to making further progress with the project in the coming months,” he said.

“[The project] is one of six data centre sites – with a combined capacity of 500 [megawatt] MW – that we have in planning and development in Ireland and the UK, a portfolio that includes [another] facility planned for the Avoca River Park, a short distance from the Kish site.

“Together, the two developments represent a potential €1bn investment in Arklow and will create more than 1,000 jobs locally in construction and in the operation of the data centres,” he added.

The 10-year planning permission conditionally granted to Echelon consists of three part one-storey and part two-storey information and communication (ICT) technology facility buildings. Each building will have a gross floor area of around 22,210 sq. m and a height of about 10.4m.

Each of the buildings will accommodate ICT equipment rooms and associated electrical, mechanical equipment and staff facilities. Echelon is to build 20 emergency generators for each ICT facility building.

The data centre is expected to be similar to Echelon’s other Arklow data centre planned for the Avoca River Park. The Avoca centre is 100MW and could represent an investment of around €500m.

Echelon signed a deal for its Avoca River Park data centre with SSE Renewables to co-locate power grid infrastructure, helping enable the development of its Arklow Bank Wind Farm Phase Two. The wind farm project will bring more than 500MW of renewable wind energy into the grid while also powering the 100MW data centre.
