Activate Learning Education Trust (ALET) UTCs & Partners, an industry/education collaboration, has been shortlisted for an award in recognition of a pioneering engineering programme, launched to address the skills gap within the digital infrastructure industry.

Hot on the heels of scooping four other global awards in just three years, the team are thrilled to be nominated for the ‘Outstanding Contribution to Skills and Training’ award at the DCS Awards 2024, celebrating outstanding achievements within the data centre sector.

The partnership has been nominated for its Digital Futures Programme; a curriculum developed in collaboration with industry leaders to provide students with a specialised pathway into the digital infrastructure sector. The programme equips students with in-demand skills and knowledge, positioning them for world-class careers in the digital infrastructure industry.

Launched at UTC Heathrow in 2021, plans are now under way to scale up the programme's intake by rolling it out across ALET’s further three University Technical Colleges (UTC Reading, UTC Swindon and UTC Oxfordshire), reflecting the initiative's contribution to shaping the future workforce and driving innovation in the sector.

The success of the initiative is attributed to the support of ALET’s industry partners: Amazon Web Services, ARK Data Centres, CBRE, CNet Training, CyrusOne, Digital Realty, LMG, Virtus Data Centres and Yondr, alongside UTC Heathrow partners JLL, KAO Data and Vertiv Data Centres.

The Digital Futures Programme is a first for any UK school and has gone from strength to strength, with the first group of apprentices taking up places this year in a data infrastructure company as a direct result of their studies.
