Introduction

Data centres and associated telecommunications facilities are growing not just physically, but also in terms of capacity and in importance as critical infrastructure. With surging demand pushing the limits of the industry’s growth potential, outages caused by fire become ever more undesirable due to their knock-on effects. This makes Very Early Warning Fire Detection (VEWFD or Class A fire detection) essential for this industry even though human life is not generally in danger.

The purpose of this Design Guide is to provide fire safety and protection consultants, qualified fire system specifiers, design engineers or technicians recommendations of application and use of SecuriSmoke Early Warning Fire Detection for data centres and datacom facilities. Its scope covers detailed recommendations, design considerations and practices for Securiton Early Warning Fire Detection systems (SecuriSmoke ASD 531, 532, 533 and 535 Aspirating Smoke Detectors and REK 511). It is also suitable for facility management and end-customers alike to gain a high-level insight into cost-effective, fit-for-purpose fire detection and protection solutions. The aim is to implement advanced fire detection methods to enhance life safety, avoid damages to the building and invaluable medical equipment due to fires, and mitigate risks through best fire prevention practices.

Although it is far from exhaustive to references to codes and standards and relevant local/regional industry Code of Practices, this Design Guide recommendations cover major international and industry codes and practices related to fire detection for Datacom facilities such as NFPA 72, FM 5-48 or ISO/AS 7240-20 (from DtS perspectives) and NFPA 75, NFPA 76, BS 6266, FM 5-14 and FM 5-32 (from PBD perspective), as well as other codes covering In spection, Test and Maintenance (ITM) such as EN 54-20, FIA Code of Practice, ISO 7240-14, BS 5839-1, AS 1851, VdS 2095 and FM 5 48.

To facilitate best risk management practices and reliable emergency response procedures through early intervention and elimination of potential fire incidents, this Design Guide touches on:

  • Use of Early Warning Fire Detection for suppression actuation
  • Securiton 360° Fire Protection Solution (FACP and ECP3)
  • Securiton Software for local and remote monitoring

The Design Guide also provides key requirements on Inspection, Testing and Maintenance (ITM) of SecuriSmoke Early Warning Fire Detection system.
