A massive data centre and battery storage site is being proposed for a site in the Devon countryside, creating up to 1,200 permanent jobs.

The UK-based company behind the scheme, Xlinks, said the AI data and energy storage development at Alverdiscott, North Devon, would bring “significant economic investment, skilled employment, and clean energy infrastructure to the region”.

It also called it a “substantial opportunity for growth in the South West”, adding it would support between 2,000 and 3,500 jobs during construction and 600 to 1,200 permanent operational roles once complete.

The campus comprises two separate planning proposals submitted to Torridge District Council: a large-scale, AI-optimised data centre and an on-site battery energy storage facility to support it.

The proposed data centre would deliver up to 1.5GW of AI-optimised compute capacity — among the largest of its kind in Europe — supported by an on-site battery energy storage facility of 1.8GW, which would provide grid balancing services and help underpin the long-term reliability of the campus.

Essex-headquartered Xlinks said the campus would represent capital investment of £12.2bn–13.8bn and is estimated to make an annual economic contribution of around £3.3bn–3.6bn.

A public consultation on both planning proposals is running until 11 August  including a series of public information days across North Devon.
