The city of Hanko has reserved land in the Eastern industrial area for the development of a new data centre, which will become part of the company’s growing portfolio in the Nordics and Europe.

The establishment comes at a time when the Nordic region is emerging as one of the world’s most attractive areas for data centre investments. With strong access to fossil-free electricity, stable infrastructure, and growing demand for AI and digital capacity, the region offers unique conditions for the digital infrastructure of the future.

Therma Loop’s concept is based on so-called DEC facilities (Data Energy centres®), where data centres are designed from the outset to be integrated with the energy system. By recovering excess heat for local district heating networks and providing support services to the power grid, both local benefits and a more resilient energy system are created.

– This establishment is an important step in our strategy to build resource-efficient AI infrastructure in the Nordics and Europe. Our model means that data centres not only consume energy, but also give back to society, says CEO Helena Fagraeus Lundström.

The facility in Hanko is planned to supply heat to the local district heating network and help strengthen the region’s energy system and digital capacity. The initiative is also part of positioning the Nordics as a central hub for the development of future digital intelligence and AI infrastructure.

– We see very strong demand for capacity in Europe in the coming years. Through our model, we can offer a faster route to grid connection (“route to power”) and thereby help meet this demand, says Duke Aschan, Head of Sales.

The land reservation in Hanko applies during a period in which necessary permits and studies are carried out. The project is expected to contribute to local development through investments in both digital and energy-related infrastructure.

The investment in Finland is part of Therma Loop’s long-term ambition to establish itself as a leading player in sustainable and resource-efficient data centre development in the Nordics and Europe.
