Plans for a new building housing a data centre at Southampton General Hospital have been approved by council planners.

University Hospital Southampton (UHS) tabled the proposal for the site at 89 Laundry Road, which is currently home to a two-storey detached house.

Following the green light by the local authority, the existing residential property, garage and outbuildings, which border the hospital grounds, will be demolished alongside the removal of several small trees.

It will be replaced by a single-storey building, with solar panels installed on the roof.

A planning statement prepared on behalf of the NHS trust by architects Hunters said: “The proposed development will consolidate existing office and data centre spaces into a single, purpose-built facility located within the hospital grounds, adjacent to the Wellbeing Hub along Laundry Road.

“The new building is part of UHS’s broader strategic master plan to enhance the operational efficiency and service delivery of its estates management.”

A design and access statement said the new facility will provide “secure, resilient and scalable” digital infrastructure to support the hospital’s activity.

As well as the data room, the building includes a switch room, workshop, meeting room, kitchenette, accessible toilet and support areas.

A report by council planning officers said: “Overall, it is acknowledged that the proposal would make a contribution to the health care facilities within the city and there would also be social and economic benefits resulting from the construction of the new building.”
