Leading manufacturer of uninterruptible power supplies Riello UPS’s new Sentryum series passes an important airport test with flying colours.

A 15 kVA version of the new transformerless range has been installed to upgrade an ageing 10 kVA unit in the main IT comms room at Belfast International Airport, Northern Ireland’s principal aviation hub and the second largest airport on the island of Ireland.

The project was carried out by certified Riello UPS reseller and service partner Ashdale Engineering Ltd, who have a long-standing working relationship with the airport dating back more than 20 years.

Chris McGarry, IT Manager for Belfast International Airport, commented: “One of our main IT UPS systems was coming to the end of its lifecycle and needed to be replaced.

“The UPS in question supports critical IT infrastructure at the airport. Whilst we have many redundant systems in place, it is very important all our UPS systems are fully-functional to avoid any power loss and possible disruption to the airport’s IT systems.

“We already have several Riello UPS systems onsite and are satisfied with their reliability and features. We monitor them over IP and found the NetMan 204 communications card very easy to install and set up.”

The Sentryum is Riello UPS’s third generation of transformerless solutions and is designed for smaller data centres and similar critical environments.

It comes in 10, 15, and 20 kVA versions plus a choice of three cabinet sizes (Compact, Active, Xtend) to enable end-users to optimise floor space and maximise battery autonomy.

The UPS delivers unity power and is capable of exceptional efficiency up to 96.5%, with a maximum of eight units parallelable to increase power or redundancy.

For Belfast International Airport, Ashdale Engineering Ltd specified a 15 kVA with five minutes’ runtime in a Compact (CPT) chassis requiring a footprint less than 0.25m2.

In addition, an external bypass was fitted which meant the supply and load cables from the existing UPS setup could feed into this new bypass arrangement.

Chris McGarry concluded: “We’re very pleased with the project. As much work as possible was done during normal hours with final connections made out of hours at a time that suited the airport, resulting in the least downtime possible.”
