A data centre could soon be built in Port Talbot, with plans recommended for approval ahead of a meeting.

Land at Tyn-Y-Caeau, Margam, has been earmarked for the development.

Proposed is full planning permission for the redevelopment of the 4.2 acres site to accommodate a data centre with associated infrastructure, landscaping, parking and access works.

Also included is the partial retention of the existing Tyn-y-Caeau building for ancillary use and the establishment of a power connection to the adjacent Western Bio-Energy Plant.

The scheme aims to make direct use of electricity from the nearby Western Bio-Energy facility and includes the land necessary to provide a private electricity wire.

An officer’s report for Neath Port Talbot Council’s planning committee said: “In summary, the proposed development comprises the redevelopment of a 1.72-hectare brownfield site at Tyn-y-Caeau to deliver a data centre and supporting infrastructure, with ancillary use of the retained farmhouse, new access and parking, renewable energy connection, and comprehensive landscape and ecological enhancement works.

 

“The scheme integrates with the surrounding industrial and energy uses west of the A48 and is designed to reuse existing infrastructure and connect directly to local renewable energy sources.”

Approval is recommended, subject to conditions.
