Plans for a huge data centre in High Wycombe have progressed as Buckinghamshire Council has said it will create a new lease for land at Wycombe Air Park.

If approved, new data centre buildings up to 23.5m high would be built in the southern part of the aerodrome off Clay Lane Booker – land previously earmarked for ‘Wycombe Film Studios’.

The decision to end the council’s existing lease of the land and to enter into a new one was agreed by leader Cllr Martin Tett in March under ‘special urgency’ powers granted to him in the constitution.

However, news of the decision emerged this week as details of the progress on the Wycombe Air Park plans were published in the agenda for the council’s annual meeting.

The leader also agreed to: “Buckinghamshire Council entering constructive dialogue with the current leaseholder to discuss a collaboration agreement relating to land elsewhere on Wycombe Air Park.”

Proposals to use the site for a data centre comes after it was confirmed during a January cabinet meeting that the company behind the film studio plans had abandoned the project.

John Chilver, the cabinet member for accessible housing and resources, said at the time: “The original intention of the tenant’s was to develop as a film studio site, but this has now proved to be unviable due to the change in market circumstances.”

A planning application for the data centre was submitted last year and claims such a site could create 300 full-time equivalent jobs.
