Proposals to construct a massive ‘AI data centre campus’ in Edinburgh have been put before planning officials.

Developers have earmarked land west of Hermiston House Road in Currie, within the Edinburgh Green Belt. The zone sits near the National Robatarium and the Heriot Watt University campus.

The development would take about three years to complete once construction begins.

Investor Apatura is behind the plans and claims the centre would “deliver a major investment in a hyperscale green AI data centre, helping to power Scotland’s digital economy while supporting local ambitions for a fairer, greener, and more prosperous future.”

According to planning documents, the site would make a “nationally significant contribution to Scotland” with “green data centres’ names as a “policy priority” across the country.

Scott Arthur MP posted about the site on social media, saying: “They claim that if approved, the Wester Hermiston AI Data Centre Campus will be a “game-changing investment” in our city and Scotland’s economy: £1.4 billion total investment, £125 million of construction spend retained in the local supply chain” and “245 jobs in Edinburgh”.

The proposal came with two proposed consultations with the first public consultation event taking place, August 28 at The National Robotarium, Heriot-Watt University (Boundary Rd N, Third Gait, Edinburgh EH14 4AS), from 3-8pm.

A second event will follow at The National Robotarium, Heriot-Watt University, also from 3-8pm.
