A data company has been granted permission to expand its centre in Chapelhall.

DataVita applied to North Lanarkshire Council seeking planning approval for an extension to its existing premises on York Road, as well as the construction of a new generator building and other features including new access provision, and this has now been granted by the planning committee subject to conditions.

A report on the application recommended it be granted, on the basis that it was “complementary and compatible with the adjacent data centre and wider strategic business setting” despite the development encroaching on green belt land.

This was justified as the applicant had successfully demonstrated the need for this specific location, and it was considered that any impact on the environment or its amenity could be addressed through planning conditions.

The project will therefore include planting of new trees to replace those which will be felled, while other work will be carried out to improve nearby grassland, including the planting of native species of shrubs and wildflowers. The conditions also include some tree protection measures.

The council received a single objection during the consultation phase of this application, from someone concerned about a badger sett and bat roosts in the area. Wildlife surveys have been carried out but although potential habitat for protected species was identified no signs of these were found in the field. However a planning condition does stipulate several measures to mitigate the possible impact of this development.
