Danish renewables developer Eurowind Energy A/S has joined forces with local IT company Edora with the intention of building the first of a series of decentralised data centres directly within a hybrid energy park in Jutland powered by wind, solar and batteries.
The partners noted that placing data centres where the electricity they use is generated will result in a reduction of both energy loss and costs.
The first data centre under this partnership will be located within an energy park with three wind turbines of 3.6 MW, solar panels totalling 8 MW, and a 10.8-MW/43.2-MWh battery energy storage system. The site will support both Enterprise AI, Edora Cloud and Managed IT services. Furthermore, it will be opened up to other data centre operators.
The other partner in this initiative is Aalborg University and its role will be to provide algorithms for calculations between the individual data centres in relation to current and future green energy production.
“With the general development of the IT area and especially with the AI revolution, the development of data centres is facing massive growth and thus gigantic energy consumption. Therefore, it is absolutely crucial that data centres are located and operated in a way that they optimally utilise green energy production,” explains Professor Jakob Stoustrup at Aalborg University.
