Boxxe Ltd. has been awarded a £7.87 million ($10.5 million) contract by UK Industrial Fusion Solutions Ltd (UKIFS) for the delivery of a modular high-performance computing (HPC) data centre.

This contract could demonstrate that modular data centres have the potential to help build the UK’s strategic infrastructure quickly and efficiently.

According to the official award notice, the modular unit will be equipped for CPU- and GPU-intensive workloads—a typical configuration for HPC applications that blend simulation, data analysis, and machine learning processing.

UKIFS is based at Culham Science Centre, Oxfordshire, a key hub for fusion energy research under the UK Atomic Energy Authority (UKAEA) Group and designated as one of the UK’s AI Growth Zones. The modular data centre is expected to be located there, positioning HPC capacity adjacent to advanced scientific research infrastructure.

On-Site HPC Becomes Critical for Fusion Research

The UKIFS goal of building the UK’s first prototype fusion power plant requires significant on-site compute capabilities, particularly for simulation and digital twin workloads.

Boxxe’s modular, on-site data centre offers UKIFS speed-to-deployment compared with traditional construction, as well as the potential to scale quickly and efficiently. Moreover, it provides the sovereign, on-premise compute capacity needed for sensitive research and industrial applications. Projects like this modular install help meet this requirement by embedding advanced compute capacity within a government-linked research ecosystem.

The modular data centre market is expanding rapidly, with a forecast of 17.2% CAGR through 2034, as demand grows for flexible, quickly-deployed infrastructure.

Market research shows modular solutions offer capex and deployment advantages over traditional stick-built centres, often configurable as containerised units, and can integrate dense cooling and power for HPC workloads.

While precise costs vary by project, industry analysts typically benchmark modular builds substantially below traditional facilities on a per-rack build & install cycle time, with reduced onsite labour and testing risk.

Modular data centre builds offer operational predictability because they are manufactured and tested off-site prior to deployment. They can provide flexible scalability, which is important to research organisations with fluctuating demand. Finally, they create opportunities for cross-institution collaboration inside a research cluster, allowing many projects to leverage colocated and shared capacity.
